The Empowering Children School in Newton Village
Instruction is taking place at our newest school in the remote Newton Village. Everyone involved is excited for these children, who are attending school for the first time ever. There are still many improvements to be made. A rudimentary bathroom with four toilets has been built completely by volunteers, including the septic tank system they dug by hand and constructed with cement blocks. We need to add more toilets and improve the building. Instruction is taking place in a building the chief is allowing us to use. Because the building is open, teachers have to gather all materials each day and take to the chief’s house for safe storage. Improvements in this building also need to be made. We have amazing, dedicated teachers who are walking 6 miles each way to teach these students. Our immediate need was for bicycles to make the journey a bit easier. Thanks to donations from supporters, bicycles were purchased for each of these teachers! Despite these challenges, the school year has begun, and 51 precious, energetic
Our most immediate need is now for more materials to use in instructing the students. If you would like to help with the The Empowering Children School in Newton Village, please use this link to donate.
Farm News
SHARP was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from New Life Thrift Grant. The grant proposal was for reaching more farmers through increasing the seed and tool loan program, and for providing more sustainable agriculture training. The Ministry of Agriculture will provide the trainers for a fee, and we provide the facility. Our newly rented agriculture center has space for a classroom. Participants will learn theory in the classroom, and have practical, hands-on instruction in the fields. This is a very exciting development, as the extra training will enable farmers to have more successful crops with higher yields. This in turn provides nutritional food for families and needed income.
