The children obtain an education and learn essential skills which will allow them to secure employment as adults. This will lift them from poverty and enable them to care for themselves, ensuring that they will not go hungry.
Quality Education
The UN SDGs name ‘Quality Education’ as Goal 4.
This goal sets out to ensure equal access to quality education for all children around the world. Education is central to global development, and investing in children is a key to continued future success. This is why education is a priority area for SHARP.
Our school in Freetown was relocated to a building out of the flood zone in 2020. Generous donors funded a van that provides safe transportation. It is now more economical for children to use the public transporttion that became available. As a result, the school community consisting of 205 students and 15 staff members have the assurance of knowing their learning environment and educational materials will not be destroyed by the frequent floods.
The first school that began in 2008 now employs 15 staff members and enrolls 205 students annually. Students consistently score high on required national exams. Our second school has 56 students who have never been to school before. The closest government school is over 5 miles away, and transportation is not provided. Currently the village chief is allowing us to use a building for instruction. The number of pupils enrolled will increase.
We have amazing, dedicated teachers who were walking 6 miles each way to teach these students. Thanks to donations from supporters, bicycles were purchased for each of these teachers and they now cycle to school! Despite many challenges, the school began and 56 precious, energetic students are being given an opportunity to change their futures! We are currently building a school in this location, as the building loaned to us is in need of more repairs than is feasible to make.
