The harvest season has begun in Sierra Leone, and families are excited and thankful to gather their successful crops. Farmers in our program plant peanuts twice during the rainy season. Initially we loan each farmer one bag of peanut seeds. From this loan, a successful harvest can yield as much as 4 bags of peanuts. After this first harvest, the farmers usually sell one or two bags of peanuts to generate immediate income. The remaining bags are kept for replanting during the second phase of the growing season.
By the end of the rainy season the second harvest is completed. This second harvest often yields an additional 4 bags of peanuts, similar to the first harvest. In total, after both harvests farmers typically make a profit equivalent to 6 bags of peanuts. This is after accounting for the bags used to repay the seed loan and replant. This cycle helps ensure sustainable farming and incresed productivity for the farmers in our program.
Farmers are also harvesting cucumbers at this time. The vegetables are sold for income, or used as food for thier families. In addition to supporting farmers with seed loans, SHARP has provided them with training by experts in agriculture, fertilizer, and tool loans.
Thank you to all of our supporters who make this possible!
