When Paris visited Sierra Leone in search of waves for surfing, she stayed in Ibrahim Kamara’s spare room as a Couch Surfer. Paris did find time to surf, but she also brought with her a suitcase full of school supplies and spent some time volunteeering with Empowering Children Schools. Duuring her stay there she purchased 20 coconut palm trees for the students to plant. This is part of the on going project with students planting and caring for trees at the new school under construction.
Not long after Paris returned home devastating flash floods swept through the communities in the low lying areas of Freetown. Paris did a birthday fundraiser, and generated many donations from her friends and family to assist with relief efforts. Another recent couch surfer, Fabian, made several Instagram posts about the flood, and also generated many donations. Their help enabled relief efforts to reach more families with needed supplies, food, and dry clothing.
The visits from world travelers have had so many benefits to all involved. Both students and travelers gain exposure to different experiences and cultures, and connections are made that last after the visitors return home.
