Empowering Children School students are working hard to prepare for the national exams taken by all 6th graders. The Freetown students bring their sleeping mats to school for a month-long camp. Teachers stay at school with them. During the month, they study intensely, preparing for exams. Families donate rice and vegetables, and teachers cook for the students.
For the first time ever, 9 students from the Newton Village school will be taking the exam! This week, they joined the students at camp in Freetown. Two of their teachers accompanied them. The exam is not the only first for these children. They had never been to the city before, so this has been an exciting week for them.

The Newton Village students joined 20 students from the Freetown school, who have already been at camp for three weeks. This is a wonderful opportunity for the teachers to collaborate and learn from each other. They will all take the exam on May 4th.
Sixth-grade students in Sierra Leone must take the NPSE (National Primary School Examination) to determine their readiness for secondary school. The exam is comprehensive and covers math, English language, verbal aptitude, quantitative aptitude, science, social studies, and agricultural science.
To attend secondary school, a student must pass the exam. To get into the school of their choice, students must score high on the exam. Empowering Children School students consistently achieve high scores.
