Students from both Empowering Children Schools recently went on a field trip to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary located in the rainforest on the outskirts of Freetown. The sanctuary was founded in 1995 with the purpose of enforcing wildlife laws, and rescuing and rehabilitating endangered, orphaned Western Chimpanzees. It has grown since that time, and today Tacugama is a diverse conservation organization engaged in wildlife field research, conservation education, sustainability, and alternative livelihood programs. In addition, they care for over 100 chimpanzees at the sanctuary.
The excursion was made possible by Ibrahim’s visitor from Germany, Fabian Papenbreer, so many thanks to him for providing the children with such a rewarding experience! Fabian and Ibrahim Kamara rented a bus, locally called a poda poda, and made two trips to transport students from grades 3 through 5. The students enjoyed the opportunity to experience something new, and were given important instruction as well. Students of Empowering Children School receive a quality education, including horticulture and environmental sustainability. This will enable them to be successful adults as well as good stewards of the earth.
