Sustainable Agriculture Program

SHARP empowers farmers through sustainable agriculture training, and seed and tool loans. Without our program these farmers did not have access to seeds, and had only sticks and machetes to use as tools. Our agriculture program allows them to earn income and have a safe food supply for their families.

We provided training to 89 farmers.

Our seed bank is currently supporting 89 farmers,

supplying sustainable livelihood to 89 families,

and feeding approximately 530 people.

The United Nations SDGs mark “Zero Hunger” as Goal 2.

If a community experiences hunger, families confront a variety of negative impacts: children become malnourished, limiting their cognitive and physical development; immune systems weaken, leading to higher rates of disease; hunger subsequently impacts overall health, which then limits victims’ economic livelihoods. As a result, finding ways to eradicate hunger is one of SHARP’s main priority areas for work.

Hunger continues to be one of the biggest problems affecting families in the communities affected by extreme climate conditions. In addition to losing their income-producing opportunities during floods, their food supplies are wiped out. Our agriculture program and seed loans help to reduce starvation.

SHARP has worked in collaboration with two programs of the US based nonprofit, iEARN (Kids Can Make A Difference and Finding Solutions to Hunger) in order to establish our seed bank. This ensures seed and food security by providing no interest seed loans to farmers. Loans are repaid in seeds after harvest.

Farmers are given sustainable agriculture training and seed and tool loans so that they can build farms and grow food to feed their families. This will help end hunger and starvation and prevent malnutrition for their children.
